Apr 05, Jo Oehrlein rated it it was ok Shelves: picture-books. I always thought of Old MacDonald as a song about farm animals and the noises they make. So, it's a little disconcerting to start the song with Old MacDonald's wife. And the songs she makes?

Kiss, kiss. Also wish the goat said Maa, Maa instead of Munch, Munch. The farmer is drawn with gray hair with white highlights. The wife looks young and has blonde hair. They definitely appear to be a May-December romance. The book ends with all the animal sounds but no kisses and then a waa-waa because the I always thought of Old MacDonald as a song about farm animals and the noises they make. The book ends with all the animal sounds but no kisses and then a waa-waa because the farmer and his wife have a baby.

Old MacDonald isn't as old as his grey hair implies or else he's an old guy with a young wife? Feb 05, Josh Bader rated it it was ok Shelves: exploring-public-library. It was the exact song. One thing I did like that I thought was very cute was the, in the end, the farmer has a baby to end the song. This had its own little twist on the book that I loved.

Review: The children already know the words to this song, so this book helps with site words. The pictures are really cute, and it serves a good purpose. In class uses: Site words, song, transition. Feb 16, Haley Barbour rated it it was amazing. It goes through all the farm animals and the farmers wife and makes the animal sounds that those animals would make!

Using thick black lines and bright colors to enhance her illustrations, she shows a farmer and his animals interacting on every exuberant double-page spread. Preschoolers will enjoy pointing out the barnyard creatures among them, a horse, a cow, a goat, hens, sheep, pigs, and ducks and chanting the sounds that the animals make. Even libraries that already have lots of versions of this song will want this one, especially since Cabrera frames the rhyme with a sweet surprise that fits right in with the story and the audience.

The text itself is traditional, with a few new to me verses, including one about Old Macdonald s wife with a kiss kiss here and even one about his otherwise unheard of baby. Other than these few alterations, the adaptation sticks to tradition and is focused more upon the illustrations than the story itself. The illustrations are bright, textured acrylic paintings, and though these might not be enough to enthrall the jaded adult who is immune to the story of Old MacDonald, a child reader would likely be attracted to the colorful and simple pictures.

This is a worthy illustrated adaptation of a timeless children s nursery rhyme, though it has nothing earth-shakingly new to offer. Response to Two Professional Reviews : I agree with the reviews that for the most part this sticks to the traditional nursery rhyme of Old Macdonald.

However similar to both reviews I absolutely love the illustrations that are throughout the book and make it seem more interesting and attention grabbing! Evaluation of Literary Elements : I think that the book is extremely approachable for younger readers. The easy to read words along with the animal sounds located right next to the illustration of that animal make connections easy for readers. The illustrations are bright and easy for an young reader to enjoy. Consideration of Instructional Application : For this book I would first have the children sing along with me as I read it.

Then I would print out color sheets of all the animals that are in the book. I would allow the children to color them as they please and then as a class we would go through all of the animals they colored in and label them with the sounds that they make based off of the book. View 2 comments.

Feb 22, Shannon rated it it was ok. This book is just like the song, except that it opens with the farmer kissing his wife and ends with them having a baby. The way he is drawn is a little creepy to me, and he also looks a LOT older than his wife. So overall just a little too weird for me. Apr 30, jacky rated it liked it Shelves: lib-lew , picture-books.
